Life Insurance for Veterans: Beyond the VA

VGLI and VA benefits are a real foundation — not always the whole answer. Here's how supplemental private coverage can fill the gaps, and the scam-ad warning every veteran should know about.

First, thank you for your service. Now let's talk honestly about coverage. Many veterans assume that VA-related benefits — SGLI while on active duty, VGLI in civilian life, VALife for service-connected disability, and the VA burial allowance — cover most of what their family would need. Those benefits are a real foundation. They are not always the most cost-effective option, especially as you age.

Why VGLI isn't always the cheapest long-term option

VGLI premiums are based on age and rise as you get older. For a healthy veteran, level-term coverage from a private carrier can sometimes be locked in for 10, 20, or 30 years at a rate that ends up lower over time. It's worth comparing — not replacing automatically.

Why the VA burial allowance isn't enough on its own

The 2026 VA burial allowance is up to roughly $1,002 for a non-service-connected death and up to $2,000 for a service-connected death, plus a plot/interment allowance and possible transportation costs. The average funeral runs many times that. A small final expense policy is often what closes the gap.

VALife in plain English

VALife is guaranteed-acceptance whole life for veterans with any service-connected disability rating — even 0%. Approval is automatic, no health questions. But coverage is capped (commonly up to $40,000), and full coverage doesn't start until two years after you apply. If you pass during that two-year window, beneficiaries get premiums paid plus interest rather than the full amount. For some veterans it's a great fit. For others, a private final expense policy with immediate coverage fits better. It depends on your health and timeline.

The scam-ad warning

If you've ever seen an ad promising "special veterans-only life insurance" or a "veteran's discount" or some kind of secret government burial benefit worth tens of thousands of dollars — that's marketing. There is no veterans-only private life insurance product. Veterans buy the same final expense and term policies anyone else does. Reputable carriers don't gate coverage to a service status, and they don't pitch you a "discount" you wouldn't otherwise qualify for.

How I actually approach it

I look at what you already have through the VA, what it costs you now and will cost you later, and where the gaps are. Then I shop multiple A-rated private carriers to see if there's a better fit, a layering opportunity, or no change needed at all.

Sometimes VGLI is the right call. Sometimes private wins. Sometimes the answer is keeping both. There's no obligation — if your existing coverage is the best deal for your situation, I'll tell you that.
